The Quintessential Global Cities No. 2: London

A shining beacon with history dating all the way back to 2000 years, established around the year 43 AD. This capital city of England and UK has gone through several major calamities like plague, devastating fire, war, aerial, and terrorist attacks, surviving and re-establishing after each one of these.

Today it’s a world cultural capital and the world’s most-visited city as measured by international arrivals with the world’s largest city airport system measured by passenger traffic. With the fifth-or sixth-largest metropolitan area GDP in the world depending on measurement, London truly is a leading Quintessential Global City & one of the world’s leading financial centres.

The City of London existed far before the country it’s in ever did. It was originally established by the Romans as ‘Londinium’, a trading post. This self governing city became fabulously wealthy by trading with the world. Even after the Roman Empire collapsed, the City of London kept thriving.

To this day, the original City of London is not an official part of the larger metropolitan area referred to as London. The original City of London is still technically independent, and even the Queen herself can’t enter the City without the permission of the Lord Mayor of London.

Confused yet? Nearly everyone is, but the main point is that the financial center of London runs independently of the rest of the country. It has its own laws which favor lax regulation on business. This freedom makes it a haven for investment from all over the world.

Many have tried to steal this crown from London, but through the centuries it has managed to cling on and stay strong.
